Southeast Alaska Cruise

7 Day Southbound Southeast Alaska Cruise

Sitka to Ketchikan

7 day 6 night itinerary with hatchery

Day One – We look forward to welcoming you aboard the Sea Mist and will meet you in Sitka, Alaska.  This unique Alaskan town is where the fish is fresh, culture is celebrated and wilderness beckons steps from your door.  You may want to arrive a few days before your charter to enjoy all Sitka has to offer.

After a brief orientation aboard the Sea Mist we will head towards Hoonah Sound.  We will spend the afternoon and evening enjoy the scenery with time for kayaking and paddleboarding if you like.

Day Two – After breakfast we will head towards Baranoff Springs - this area has spectacular views.  The town itself is very small and is located on the eastern side of Baranof Island.  A large beautiful new public boat and plane dock along with bath house, natural hot springs, picnic shelter is all open to the public. Baranof lake is a short walk away and is spectacular with its waterfall and natural hot springs.  After a beach walk to the waterfall enjoy dinner on the Sea Mist.

Day Three – After breakfast we will head for Hidden Falls Fish Hatchery.  Hidden Falls Hatchery is located in Kasnyku Bay on Baranof Island on Chatham Strait. This hatchery was built by the State of Alaska in 1978-79 and operated by the State until 1988 when operational responsibility was transferred to NSRAA.  There is a good chance we will see brown bears while visiting this hatchery.

Day Four – After an early departure we will have breakfast on our way to Petersburg, a fishing village founded by Norwegian immigrant Peter Buschmann.  He started building the first fishing cannery in the late 1800’s.  Petersburg has several canneries operating today, but the Tlingit fishermen were fishing this area over 2,000 years ago.  At low tide you can walk among the remains of their ancient fish traps. – You will have time to explore before dinner.

Day Five – Today we travel to Wrangell, one of Alaska's oldest non-Native settlements.  It was settled by Russian traders in 1834. Wrangell's heyday was as a jumping-off point for three major gold rushes up the Stikine River from 1861 to the late 1890s. Back then Wrangell was as lawless and ruthless as Skagway and at one point Wyatt Earp, the famous Arizona lawman, filled in as a volunteer marshal for 10 days before moving on to Nome. Wrangell is full of rich history, seaside shops, petroglyphs, and totems.

Day Six – After breakfast we will head through a narrow passageway on our way to Myers Chuck –Meyers Chuck is off the grid, with no roads or cars, and even by Alaska standards, it is tiny. Summer is the busy season, when people boat up to their cabins and swell the population to 25 or so. Cassy Peavey, 74, is the postmistress of Meyers Chuck and is known for her savory cinnamon rolls.  In the summer, the population of Meyers Chuck is over 20 – in the winter, many times it is only Cassy and her husband.

Day Seven – As we wave goodbye to Meyers Chuck, we will head for Ketchikan. Set at the southernmost entrance to Alaska’s famed Inside Passage, Ketchikan is best known for three things: feisty salmon, idyllic scenery, and an incredibly rich Alaska Native culture.

Day Four – Our adventure today includes a stop at Tenakee Springs, a small community of about 100 people located on Chichagof Island in Southeast Alaska. Some feel a visit to Tenakee would be complete without a long soak in the hot springs, whose healing properties drew the Tlingit people to this area long ago, as well as miners during the days of the gold rush who would stay through the winter. Enjoy this quaint little town.

Day Five – After breakfast we will head towards Swanson. This village is surrounded by abundant marine wildlife. Enjoy a relaxing day of scenery, kayaking and paddleboarding.

Day Six – Our journey ends here in Alaska’s capitol city of Juneau. We always “chuckle” as our state capital is not able to be accessed by the road system. Located in the Gastineau Channel and the Alaskan panhandle, it is a unified municipality and the second-largest city in the United States by area. Juneau was named the capital of Alaska in 1906, when the government of what was then the District of Alaska was moved from Sitka as dictated by the U.S. Congress in 1900. The municipality unified on July 1, 1970, when the city of Juneau merged with the city of Douglas and the surrounding Greater Juneau Borough to form the current municipality, which is larger by area than both Rhode Island and Delaware. Perhaps you will decide to spend a few days in Juneau exploring on your own before you leave our beautiful state.
